African Water Ministers begin planning SDG implementation at SWA meeting

GWOPA participated in the African Ministers' meeting, organized by the Sanitation and Water for All platform, bringing the voice of operators to the table.

Water scarcity, climate change and a rapidly growing population mean that effective planning at international, national and ground level is imperative in efforts towards achieving the SGD on the continent.

The meeting, held in Addis Ababa on the 15th and 16th March, was one of the first to directly address issues of SDG implementation at Minister level since the adoption of the new agenda in 2015. The GWOPA Secretariat was invited to the meeting along with numerous civil society organizations, development partners and donors in order to be part of this dialogue and help foster action.

The Head of the GWOPA Secretariat attended the meeting and called for increased collaboration between GWOPA and SWA on the basis of their complementarity: SWA as a platform advocating for increased investment in the sector to achieve the SDGs, and GWOPA as an Alliance principally composed of operators working on the ground to implement sustainable access.

At the end of this meeting, it was announced that the next edition of the Ministers’ meeting will be hosted by the World Bank and will gather Finance Ministers to look at the investment requirements in the sector.

As an active step towards increasing collaboration with SWA, GWOPA has applied to become a member of the platform.
